Mexico City Plans New Rules After Huge World Cup Celebration

Mexico City,Saturday, June 20, 2026
After Mexico’s national team moved into the knockout rounds, more than 700, 000 fans flooded downtown to cheer. The streets were alive with green jerseys, bright masks and the sound of cheering. Overnight the city’s main avenue was covered in trash and trampled flowers, prompting officials to collect 40 tons of waste. The city government says it will curb illegal alcohol sales on the streets. It plans to ask nearby restaurants and bars to keep drinks inside, and may ask convenience stores to stop selling alcohol before big matches. The mayor’s office also intends to add seven extra giant screens around the historic center, hoping that more people will watch games on TV instead of staying in crowds.
Police officers will increase their presence to stop street vendors from selling beer during games. Officials want fans to enjoy themselves, but not with too much drinking. The plan comes after other host cities, like Boston, saw large crowds of Scottish supporters drink heavily and run out of beer. Mexico will next play the Czech Republic in the group stage.
