Michigan Golf Trip: Weather, Wedges and Weekend Wins

Northern Michigan, Traverse City, USAFriday, July 3, 2026

The trip kicked off on a clear July morning that promised perfect golf conditions. A lightning strike paused play after 15 holes, but the group bounced back to hit a total of 166 rounds across seven days without a single drop of rain.

The main destination was the Bear course in Traverse City, a Jack Nicklaus design that challenged players with more bunkers than any other local course. Even though the fairways were tough, the group managed respectable scores, with a personal best of 95 at The Legend, an Arnold Palmer‑styled layout.

Beyond the greens, the stay featured two standout resorts: Shanty Creek and Garland Golf Resort. Both offered lively atmospheres, with Shanty’s ski‑village vibe and Garland’s forest setting. The food at Garland was a highlight, especially the hanger steak that kept running out over three nights. At Shanty, a turkey avocado sandwich with roasted red pepper and aioli became a repeat favorite.

The trip also highlighted the local beer scene, with Short’s Brewery in Bellaire providing a casual backdrop for parties and golf. The mix of weekend warriors, young professionals, and family members created an “adult summer camp” vibe that made every round feel special.

Weather fluctuations added a twist: early mornings stayed in the low‑50s, while by midweek temperatures climbed to 105°F and humidity spiked after a heavy rain week. Despite the heat, the group stayed engaged, even handling unexpected plumbing repairs that added a dash of real‑world hassle to an otherwise smooth getaway.

The experience underscored the value of community and shared adventure, reminding participants that a good golf trip is about more than scores—it’s about the stories, laughter, and camaraderie that carry through the seasons.
