Universal's Wicked made its debut in Japan this weekend, earning $3. 7 million. This performance is notable as it surpasses the opening weekends of several other films, including Wonka, Barbie, The Greatest Showman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Jungle Book, Les Miserables, and Mamma Mia 2. The international total for Wicked is now $261 million, bringing the global total to $733. 8 million.
Ne Zha 2, an animated blockbuster, has topped $2 billion in China, becoming the first movie to achieve this milestone in a single market. The film's gross in China through Sunday is an estimated RMB 14. 66 billion, or approximately $2. 028 billion. Including estimated grosses of about $31 million from releases outside of China, the worldwide total is $2. 059 billion. This places Ne Zha 2 at number 6 on the all-time chart, surpassing Avengers: Infinity War.
Ne Zha 2's success in China continues to drive presales, with ticketing app Maoyan predicting a final China total of RMB 15 billion ($2. 075 billion). This would push Ne Zha 2 above Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the 5th highest-grossing movie in history. The film has been released in several markets outside of China, including North America, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, and some smaller markets. It is set to release in the UK on March 21 and in Japan on April 4.
The Imax total for Ne Zha 2 through Sunday is $148 million in China, bringing the global total to $150. 6 million. Last weekend's Best Picture winner, Anora, saw a significant uptick in overseas play for Universal, earning $3. 1 million in 53 markets. The international total for Anora is $18. 7 million, with FilmNation markets at $9. 1 million. The global total is $46. 2 million. Mega increases were seen in Italy, Spain, Mexico, Germany, the UK, Korea, and the Netherlands.
