Mistakes and Mishaps: Lufthansa Fined for Handling of Jewish Passengers

In a significant move, Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, has been slapped with a $4 million fine by the US Department of Transportation (DOT). This fine centers around an incident in May 2022 where 128 Jewish passengers, sporting traditional Orthodox attire, were barred from boarding a flight. The DOT cited discrimination, noting that these passengers were not traveling together and were targeted due to allegations of misbehavior by a few. The situation arose from a flight originating in New York, with the aim of connecting through Frankfurt to Budapest. Lufthansa claims that a series of miscommunications and misjudgments led to the decision to deny boarding. Passengers were accused of ignoring safety announcements, obstructing food and beverage services, and arguing about mask-wearing policies.

Lufthansa stated that the actions of a few passengers created disruptions, but the DOT's penalty is a record high, signaling the federal agency’s resolve to uphold civil rights in air travel. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that no one should face discrimination during travel. In response, Lufthansa has partnered with the American Jewish Committee to create training programs aimed at mitigating antisemitism and discrimination among its employees.
