MIT to Offer Free Tuition for Lower-Income Students

Starting from fall 2025, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) plans to make college more affordable. They'll start by not charging tuition for students whose families earn under $200, 000 a year. But the best part is that families making less than $100, 000 won't pay anything at all, including housing, food, and books! This is because MIT believes their tough, hands-on science and engineering programs are valuable. They want to ensure that money doesn't stop talented students from joining MIT.

Currently, nine schools, including MIT, don't consider a student's ability to pay during admissions. Despite a steep price tag of over $62, 000, students receiving financial aid only pay about $12, 938 annually. This major change shows the importance of past donations from alumni, which have built up an endowment to help today's and future students.
