Moldova's Big EU Decision: What's Really at Stake?

Moldova is at a crossroads. Voters are deciding whether to lean towards the European Union (EU) or not. Recent polls show that about half of the voters (53 percent according to one survey) are for joining the EU. But there's a twist. Moldova is also voting for its president, Maia Sandu, who's currently leading the polls. Her team hopes that pro-EU voters will also support her. But it's not that simple.

The war in Ukraine has hit Moldova hard. It's caused supply chain issues and high inflation, making people unhappy. Some voters might use the referendum to show their anger towards Sandu's administration. The opposition has many candidates, each with their own anti-EU and anti-Sandu messages. Some want people to vote "no" in the referendum, while others want people not to vote at all, hoping the referendum won't have enough voters. Russia is also involved. It supports the opposition and has even been accused of trying to bribe voters. But the accused oligarch denied it.
