Money Flow in a Campaign: A Closer Look
The latest financial filing from a congressional candidate reveals that cash is being redirected to the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) rather than staying in the candidate’s own account. Two large transfers—$62,000 on March 31 and $34,000 on June 27—were sent to the NRCC, all sourced from donors.
Despite these transfers, the campaign continues to push email appeals for more contributions. The spending pattern shows that a significant portion of the money is funneled into consulting services:
- Ryland Consulting billed $30,000 in early March.
- The Stanton Group and Laura Bell Consulting together spent over $140,000 on fundraising advice.
Digital outreach also consumes a large chunk:
- Strategic Partners and Media LLC received $36,000 for online strategy.
- CD Acquisitions was paid $15,000.
- Media consultant Tim Murtaugh received $65,000.
These payments cover everything from social media campaigns to traditional media placement.
Compliance costs add another layer of expense. Political Compliance Services Inc. was paid $25,700 over the year to ensure that all spending met federal regulations—a common practice but one that further drains campaign resources.
In total, the candidate’s office has reported spending just over a million dollars. Of that amount, roughly $408,000—about 39 % went to the national committee and various consulting firms. This figure dwarfs a single $2,887 expense reported elsewhere for cosmetic services in another campaign.
