Moon Mission: Athena's Big Adventure

Athena's destination is Mons Mouton, a plateau near the lunar south pole. This spot is perfect for a mission like this because it offers enough sunlight to power the lander while keeping a clear view of Earth for communication. The area is also extremely cold, which could mean it contains volatiles—chemical substances that can easily change from a liquid to a solid to a gas. These volatiles might hold trapped water ice.
Athena's journey will include several exciting moments. After separating from the rocket, the lander will deploy smaller spacecraft, including the Lunar Trailblazer probe and a microwave-size spacecraft from AstroForge. These spacecraft will continue their missions in deep space, scouting for precious metals and mapping water distribution on the moon's surface.
Once Athena lands, the real work begins. The lander will start drilling into the moon's surface, aiming to reach a depth of one meter. The Micro Nova Hopper, named Grace, will conduct several hops up to 50 meters in the air before diving into a nearby crater to detect ice. A four-wheeled rover from Lunar Outpost will also roll out, carrying its own instruments and experimental technology. Both the rover and the hopper will test out the use of a cellular network on the moon as part of a NASA-sponsored experiment.
Athena's mission is expected to last about 10 days. During this time, the lander will be busy with a packed schedule of tasks. This mission is a big step forward in lunar exploration and could pave the way for future missions to the moon and beyond.
