Mosquito Moves North: Why We Need Better Tracking

A new wave of mosquitoes is slipping into places that used to stay cool, like New England. Climate change has made these areas warmer and wetter, giving insects that carry viruses a chance to settle in.

The Rising Menace

In Connecticut, scientists have found 54 kinds of mosquitoes, including the Asian tiger mosquito that can spread dengue and Zika. That species normally lives far south, but it is now moving northward.

State programs that trap and test mosquitoes are essential. They help spot “hot spots” before people get sick, because by the time a disease shows up in humans it is often too late to stop it. Unfortunately, most U.S. states rely on many small local groups instead of a single statewide effort. These groups differ in how they work and how much money they have, making it hard to share data.

New York’s Response

In New York, a new county‑wide monitoring project started after an outbreak of Eastern equine encephalitis. That disease can kill about 30 % of those infected, and while it is rare, cases are rising in the Northeast. The project uses traps that attract female mosquitoes with smelly water or dry ice, but in rural areas even getting the ice can be tough. The team had to produce their own.

Without a coordinated system, some invasive species slip through unnoticed. Funding is the biggest hurdle: if a county can’t afford to keep traps running, the program stops and we only react after an outbreak. A bill in New York’s legislature aims to create a unified mosquito surveillance system, moving from the current patchwork approach.

When an outbreak happens, larger pesticide sprays may be needed. Centralized data would let health officials act faster and save lives.
