Mosquitoes in Germany: Chikungunya Virus Carriers with Limited Movement at Low Temperatures
EuropeThursday, December 5, 2024
They tested Ae. albopictus at different temperatures, from 15°C to 24°C. Surprisingly, these mosquitoes were quite good at carrying the virus. However, when the temperature dropped, they didn't move around much. This means they might not be as effective at spreading the virus in colder regions.
It's interesting to note that while these mosquitoes can carry the virus, their ability to move around and potentially spread it is reduced in cooler temperatures. This is something to consider when thinking about the risk of CHIKV in places like Central Europe.
