Mountain Games Shift Water Races to New Rivers

Vail, Colorado, USASaturday, May 2, 2026

A Winter of Scarcity, A Summer of Adaptation

The winter’s record-breaking lack of snowfall has left its mark—and not just on the slopes. Rivers in the Vail area are running at uncharacteristically low levels, prompting a bold pivot by the Mountain Games organizers. Instead of surrendering to cancellation, they’ve reimagined the water events, relocating key races to nearby rivers where the flow remains strong enough for safe, thrilling competition.

Freestyle Takes the Stage Elsewhere

The Pacifico Kayak Freestyle, originally slated for local waters, now unfolds at the Glenwood Whitewater Activity Area. Qualifiers and semifinals roar into action on June 5, with the final showdown the following day, June 6. For those who can’t make the trip, fear not—spectators in Vail can catch every twist and turn on a giant screen. And if that weren’t enough, the event doubles as entertainment, pairing elite paddlers with slackline performers and other festivities.

Downriver Drama Shifts East

Three high-octane races—GoPro Down River Kayak Sprint, Pacifico Down River R2 Raft Sprint, and Slifer Smith & Frampton Down River SUP Sprint—have packed up and moved to a stretch of the Upper Colorado River between Pumphouse and Radium recreation areas in Bond. All action unfolds on June 6, with start times finely tuned to the river’s rhythm. The change of scenery promises fresh challenges for competitors and a new spectacle for onlookers.

Anglers Reel in the Unexpected

The YETI Catch Wars fishing competition has also set sail for the Upper Colorado River on June 5. Anglers will test their skills against fluctuating water levels in a quest for the day’s biggest catch—proving that even in a low-snow year, the thrill of the chase remains undiminished.

When the Water Won’t Cooperate

Not every event could be salvaged. The Pacifico Gore IV Kayak Challenge, Pacifico Gore IV Raft Challenge, Pacifico Kayak Cross, and Pacifico Raft Cross have been scrapped entirely due to unsafe conditions. Athletes pre-registered for these races will receive automatic refunds. Meanwhile, participants in relocated events can rest easy—no action required. But if the thought of a detour dampens their spirits, they’ve got until May 15 to request a refund.

Stay Tuned, Stay Informed

River levels are a living thing, and organizers are watching them like hawks. Any last-minute adjustments could still reshuffle the schedule, so flexibility is key. The game plan? Download the Mountain Games app, turn on notifications, and stay locked in for real-time updates. For the full scoop—schedules, venues, and all—check the official Mountain Games website or fire up the app.

The show must go on, even if the rivers run a little thinner. This year’s Mountain Games aren’t just about endurance—they’re about resilience.
