Current Statistics
- 24 cases reported since January, with over half occurring after September.
- Only 7 cases reported in the entire previous year.
- 2022 saw a significant outbreak with 241 cases between July and December.
Who is at Risk?
- Gay and bisexual men, or anyone with multiple sexual partners.
- The virus spreads through close contact, such as sharing items or sexual activity.
- Symptoms include painful rash, fever, and other flu-like symptoms.
- Most people recover on their own, but it can be serious for those with weak immune systems.
Types of Mpox
- Clade II: Milder, has been present in the U.S. since 2022.
- Clade I: More severe, but no cases reported in Baltimore yet.
Prevention and Vaccination
- Vaccines are available through the Baltimore City Health Department or your doctor.
- Maryland has had 857 cases and 3 deaths since 2022, mostly in Baltimore City and Prince George's County.
