In 2023, a gripping murder-mystery series called "The Aosawa Murders" is set to captivate audiences. This series is based on a prize-winning Japanese crime novel of the same name by Riku Onda. The story unfolds in the enchanting coastal city of Kanazawa, Japan, focusing on the infamous "Aosawa Case." In 1973, 17 members of the wealthy Aosawa clan perished after consuming poisoned sake and soft drinks during a family celebration. Fast forward to 2004, freelance writer Yuko arrives in Kanazawa to investigate this chilling mass poisoning. She meets Makiko Saiga, the author of a book inspired by the murders, but when Makiko reveals little, Yuko takes it upon herself to dig deeper. Her quest leads her to Hisako Aosawa, the sole survivor of the tragedy, who was just a blind 12-year-old girl at the time. The series is produced by Jonathan Kier and Takeo Kodera. Kier, who read the English translation of the novel, was instantly drawn to the story's haunting atmosphere. The series spans six episodes, moving back and forth in time as Yuko tries to piece together the puzzle of the mass poisonings. Naoko Adachi, a renowned Japanese TV writer, is penning the script. The show aims to blend local Japanese creativity with an international perspective, making it accessible to a global audience. Producers are optimistic that the crime drama will benefit from the success of similar Japanese projects, such as the critically acclaimed "Shōgun."
