Nanoparticles in Water: How They Affect Fish Gills and Microbes
Monday, January 27, 2025
Now, what about the trout's immune system? A couple of things happened here. ZnO nanoparticles affected how well the fish could fight infections and keep their gills strong. Meanwhile, TiO₂ nanoparticles and the mixture of both reduced the production of certain substances that help fight bacteria and trigger inflammation.
So, in simple terms, the mix of nanoparticles was tougher on the microbiota but didn't affect the immune system as much. This shows that different types of nanoparticles can have different effects on fish health. It also shows that we need to do more research on what happens when these tiny particles mix together in our waters.
