NASA's Europa Clipper: A Cosmic Treasure Hunt
SpaceMonday, October 28, 2024
Jupiter's immense gravity causes extreme tides on Europa, which could generate heat and stir up chemical reactions in Europa's ocean. Life as we know it needs water, energy, and nutrients. Europa might have all three. Some think the moon could have been seeded with life-supporting chemicals during its early years. Additionally, the toxic radiation from Jupiter might actually fuel life deep under Europa's icy shell.
The Europa Clipper is equipped with nine instruments to gather data about the moon's ice shell and ocean. It will make several flybys of Europa, hoping to uncover secrets about its habitability. The spacecraft's life will end in 2034 when it's intentionally crashed into another of Jupiter's moons, Ganymede.
