NASA's Solar Sail Spacecraft Has a Bent Boom, but No Worries!

One of its four booms, which supports the solar sail that deployed successfully in August, has a slight bend. This was noticed in a photo taken by the spacecraft's own cameras. The bend isn't surprising; it likely happened when the booms were pulled tight during deployment. Mission control isn't too worried about it, as they think the spacecraft can still do its sailing tricks just fine. Right now, ACS3 is doing a slow backflip, which is normal and not a big deal.

Solar sailing is a clever way to propel spacecraft using sunlight. Japan and NASA have already tried it with missions like Ikaros, NanoSail-D, and LightSail-2. This new method could open up new possibilities for space exploration.
