NATO Drills Amid Trump's Ukraine Shift

Near Romania's border with Ukraine, NATO's Allied Reaction Force (ARF) recently held large-scale military exercises. These drills, known as Steadfast Dart 25, involved tanks, fighter jets, and other military units from nine allied countries. These exercises showcased NATO's ability to respond swiftly to potential threats, like a sudden attack from Russia. The United States, although not directly participating, remained a key focus due to its longstanding role in NATO. The drills came at a tense time, with President Trump blaming Ukraine and its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the war sparked by Russia's 2022 invasion. Trump criticized Zelenskyy's leadership, while Zelenskyy accused Trump of spreading Russian disinformation. Despite this tension, retired U. S. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump's envoy to Russia and Ukraine, met with Zelenskyy and other top officials in Kyiv. Kellogg described the talks as "extensive and positive, " while Zelenskyy expressed hope for strong agreements with the U. S. Meanwhile, U. S. Navy Admiral Stuart Munsch, commander of JFC Naples, one of NATO's Joint Force Commands, was in Romania overseeing the exercises. When asked about Trump's shift in stance towards Ukraine, Munsch emphasized NATO's position that the invasion was unprovoked. He also reiterated that NATO follows the orders of its duly elected officials, maintaining that there have been no new decisions made.

NATO, formed in 1949, has been crucial in maintaining European peace. The alliance's collective defense clause, Article 5, means an attack on one ally is an attack on all. The U.
