Naval Concerns: Russia and China Team Up

Admiral Samuel Paparo, who heads the U. S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM), recently warned about the potential for Russia to boost China's submarine technology, thereby challenging U. S. naval dominance in the region. During a security forum, Paparo expressed concerns about Russia sharing its advanced submarine tech with China. This technology could make it harder for the U. S. to maintain its underwater advantage. Paparo also suggested that Russia might provide similar assistance to North Korea, including submarines and missiles. China is currently the biggest military challenge for the U. S. , closing the power gap more rapidly than other rivals. The Indo-Pacific theater is particularly stressful due to the high quantity and quality of weapons needed to counter China.

Retired Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery noted that Russia's submarines have superior quieting technology, making them difficult to detect. He believes that while it's risky for Russia to support China in this way, it could be done to secure future military leverage against the U. S. The increasing cooperation between China and Russia is a significant problem for the U. S. Prior to the Ukraine invasion, China agreed to buy substantial amounts of coal from Russia, providing economic relief amidst Western sanctions. This deal strengthened their alliance and led to further commitments within organizations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS.
