New Apple Devices Bring Faster, Safer, and Longer‑Lasting 5G

Cupertino CA, USATuesday, March 3, 2026
Apple’s latest releases, the iPhone 17e and an iPad Air with the M4 chip, both feature a new in‑house 5G modem called C1X. The company claims the chip gives three main perks that set it apart from other modems on the market. First, speed. Apple says the C1X can deliver data rates that are up to 50 % faster than the Qualcomm modem in its previous iPad Air. The chip is also twice as fast as Apple’s earlier C1 modem used in the iPhone 16e. Beyond raw numbers, the modem can sense network traffic and prioritize urgent data. That means a phone may feel snappier when many apps are trying to use the internet at once.
Second, privacy. iOS 26. 3 introduces a “Limit Precise Location” setting that only works on devices with Apple’s own modems. When enabled, cellular networks can locate a phone to a neighbourhood level instead of a street address. The feature does not hurt signal quality, but it is only supported by some carriers right now. Third, battery life. 5G use drains power quickly, but the C1X is more efficient than third‑party modems. Apple estimates up to 30 % less energy use on the new iPad Air for users who stay connected. The same efficiency advantage carries over to the iPhone 17e from its predecessor’s C1 modem. Overall, Apple argues that owning a device with the C1X gives faster internet, better location privacy, and longer battery life. Whether those gains matter to each user will depend on how often they use 5G and what privacy concerns they have.
