New chapter begins for Pittsburgh Penguins
PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, USAFriday, June 26, 2026
Lemieux has deep ties to the Penguins. Back in 1999, he stepped in to save the team when it was in trouble. The Penguins were almost moved out of Pittsburgh, but Lemieux took over part of the ownership to keep the team in the city. He even helped secure a new arena deal in 2007, locking the team into Pittsburgh until 2040.
The new owners see Lemieux as a key part of the Penguins' future. Geoff Hoffmann, the family’s CEO, said they want Lemieux involved in whatever way works best for him. The team’s leadership believes his experience and connection to the city make him invaluable.
Hoffmann also made it clear that this isn’t just a business deal for the family. They’re committed to Pittsburgh for the long haul, not just for a quick profit. The Penguins will stay in the city, and the Hoffmanns plan to be part of the team for generations.
