New chapter begins for Pittsburgh Penguins

The Hoffmann family just bought the Penguins for $1. 75 billion, five times what a previous ownership group paid in 2018. That group had struggled to keep the team in Pittsburgh, even considering a move years ago. The new owners have big plans to make the Penguins a long-term fixture in the city. One of the biggest names in Pittsburgh hockey history might soon have a bigger role. Mario Lemieux, a five-time Stanley Cup winner, could take on a new position with the team. He already owns the most goals in Penguins history and ranks second in points and assists. The current captain, Sidney Crosby, holds the top spot in points and assists, but Lemieux remains a legend in the city.

Lemieux has deep ties to the Penguins. Back in 1999, he stepped in to save the team when it was in trouble. The Penguins were almost moved out of Pittsburgh, but Lemieux took over part of the ownership to keep the team in the city. He even helped secure a new arena deal in 2007, locking the team into Pittsburgh until 2040. The new owners see Lemieux as a key part of the Penguins' future. Hoffmann also made it clear that this isn’t just a business deal for the family. They’re committed to Pittsburgh for the long haul, not just for a quick profit.
