New Classes Coming to Fairfax County Schools
Starting in the 2026-27 school year, Fairfax County is introducing new classes to its middle and high schools. The school board has approved courses on artificial intelligence, personal finance, and cybersecurity.
New Optional Classes
Most of the new classes are optional, allowing schools to offer them based on student interest. Some of the new courses include:
- AI Essentials
- Artificial Intelligence II
- AP Business with Personal Finance
- AP Cybersecurity
- Advanced Topics in Chemistry
- Geology
Artificial Intelligence
The AI courses cover how artificial intelligence works and its impact on society. These classes are designed to give students a foundational understanding of AI technologies and their applications.
Personal Finance
The AP Business with Personal Finance class will be available at all schools with full AP programs. This course allows students to take an exam at the end of the year. Passing the exam can earn them college credit.
Cybersecurity
The AP Cybersecurity course teaches students about digital threats and how to manage risks. This course is crucial in today's digital age, where cybersecurity is a growing field.
Chemistry and Geology
For students interested in chemistry but not ready for an AP course, there will be a new class called Advanced Topics in Chemistry. Additionally, Geology will be offered for the first time, although it has been state-approved for years.
World Language Options
Fairfax County is also expanding its world language options. New languages include:
- Arabic
- Chinese
- American Sign Language
- French
- German
- Japanese
- Korean
- Latin
- Russian
- Vietnamese
These classes aim to prepare students for future careers in a globalized world.
Ensuring Fairness
Board member Karl Frisch emphasized the importance of fairness. He suggested that students who want to take a class not offered at their school should be able to join virtually. This would ensure that all students have equal access to these courses.
