NASA has appointed Carlos Garcia-Galan, a seasoned space professional, as the deputy manager of its Gateway program. This initiative is crucial for the Artemis mission, aiming to return humans to the moon and eventually set a path for Mars exploration. Garcia-Galan, who hails from Spain, brings a whopping 27 years of experience in human spaceflight to the table. He's been involved in projects like the International Space Station and worked at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Garcia-Galan's journey in space exploration began in his childhood, watching NASA's shuttle launches on TV. "It was something that called to me from the very beginning, " he recalls. Before taking on this new role, Garcia-Galan was managing the Orion Program's European Service Module Integration Office. There, he oversaw the design and performance of spacecraft, mission analysis, and launch operations support. Vanessa Wyche, the director of the Johnson Space Center, praised Garcia-Galan's appointment. "His extensive experience in human spaceflight, international collaborations, and deep-space spacecraft development and operations will be incredibly valuable for the Gateway, " she said. The Gateway is touted as humanity's first space station to orbit the moon. NASA's Orion spacecraft, designed to take humans further into space than ever before, is scheduled to launch as part of the Artemis-III mission in 2027. This new role offers Garcia-Galan the opportunity to lead the development of "humanity's first outpost in deep space. " It's a dream come true for someone who grew up inspired by NASA's accomplishments.
