New Helipad Boosts Air‑Patient Transfers in West Texas
UMC Health System has opened a new double‑helipad on the corner of 8th Street and Texas Tech Parkway, adjacent to its main Lubbock hospital. This upgrade replaces the old single helipad that will no longer be in use.
Faster, Safer Patient Movement
The new landing pad allows helicopters to land side by side, dramatically reducing the time required to transport patients from across West Texas and eastern New Mexico. UMC moves approximately 6,000 people by air each year, so this improvement could save countless lives.
Streamlined Ground Transfer
To further smooth the process, UMC has acquired a small ambulance that ferries patients directly from the helipad to the Emergency Center. Pilots are instructed to call in before arrival so staff can meet them promptly. Security officers operate the mini ambulance and assist with patient transfer.
Commitment to Regional Emergency Care
This change underscores UMC’s dedication to improving emergency services in the region. By cutting wait times and enhancing transport safety, the hospital aims to deliver quicker treatment for patients requiring specialized care.
