New Leadership Takes the Helm at WeightWatchers

Sima Sistani, the company's CEO for over two years, has stepped down, paving the way for Tara Comonte to take over as interim CEO. Comonte, a board member and former Shake Shack executive, has been tasked with improving the company's operational and financial performance. The weight loss company has faced challenges in recent times, with slipping profits and rising costs from restructuring efforts. Its stock has plummeted, with shares down by more than 90% over the past year. Despite these difficulties, Comonte is optimistic about the company's future, stating that she looks forward to working with the leadership team to expand access and care during this critical period of transformation.

Comonte's appointment comes as WeightWatchers is expanding its services into the prescription drug weight loss business. The company's acquisition of Sequence, a telehealth service, has allowed it to offer users prescriptions for drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Trulicity. With Comonte at the helm, WeightWatchers is poised to continue its growth and development in this area. Sistani, who joined WeightWatchers in 2019, has led the company through several significant changes, including the acquisition of Sequence. Prior to joining WeightWatchers, she co-founded Houseparty, a social networking app that offered group video chatting. She also held senior leadership roles at Epic Games. The departure of Sistani marks the second significant change in WeightWatchers' leadership in recent months. In February, former talk show host Oprah Winfrey stepped down from the company's board, citing a desire to eliminate any perceived conflict of interest. Winfrey had served on the board since 2015 and had been a long-time supporter of the company.
