New Naked Statue in San Francisco: Hope or Hype?

San Francisco is pinning its hopes on a giant statue of a naked woman to draw visitors back to Union Square. This 45-foot mesh sculpture, created by Marco Cochrane, debuts on January 29. The installation, which glows at night, is meant to attract tourists and revive the district hit hard by the pandemic and other issues. Merchants are eager for the economic boost they expect the art to bring.

The project was proposed by a women-run art group called Building 180. Shannon Riley, the founder, believes the statue can help San Francisco rise above its recent struggles. However, not everyone is convinced. Some locals, like artist Javier Perez, think the city needs more practical solutions to its problems before focusing on public art. Newly elected mayor, Daniel Lurie, is also hoping to breathe life back into the downtown area. His priorities include tackling drug use, homelessness, and boosting business. The statue, titled "R-Evolution, " aims to symbolize feminine strength and empowerment.
