New Plastic Mixes Found Along Turkey’s Black Sea Shore

Turkish Black Sea coast, Sinop, TurkeyFriday, July 17, 2026
Scientists walked along two beaches in Sinop and found a surprising mix of plastic‑based materials that have never been recorded there before. The items—called plastiglomerates, pyroplastics, plastimetals and plastitar—show how plastic can melt, fuse with stone or metal, and weather into new forms.

By using infrared spectroscopy, researchers confirmed that most of the samples were made from common plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, nylon and polyvinyl fluoride. The study points to heat from the sun or improper dumping as possible causes, but it did not trace a specific source of pollution.

This is the first time these new plastic composites have been documented on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, highlighting how human waste can create unexpected materials in the environment.
