New Rules for Flying: What You Need to Know About Check-In Times

Travelers flying within the United States on United Airlines will soon have to check in earlier. Starting June 3, the airline will require passengers with only carry-on luggage to check in 45 minutes before their flight. This change aligns United's policy with many other airlines and aims to create a more consistent experience for travelers. This new rule is part of a broader trend among airlines. Many carriers have tightened their check-in and boarding policies to ensure on-time departures, especially as travel demand has surged post-pandemic. Checking in confirms a passenger's booking and prepares the airport and airline for the upcoming flight. This includes confirming seat assignments and ensuring passenger names are at security checkpoints. Different airlines have different check-in policies. For example, Dubai-based Emirates closes online check-ins 90 minutes before departure, while Ireland’s Ryanair allows online check-in up to two hours before a flight. However, passengers checking in at the airport 40 minutes before a Ryanair flight will have to pay a fee.

United Airlines is not the only carrier making changes. Delta Air Lines recently updated its policy, requiring passengers without checked bags to arrive at least 30 minutes before domestic flights. Delta's move was to ensure a smooth experience for all customers. For international flights, Delta requires check-in at least an hour before departure, with some airports having earlier deadlines. American Airlines has a 45-minute check-in deadline for domestic flights and a 60-minute cutoff for international trips. Southwest Airlines requires passengers with checked bags to arrive 45 minutes before departure. Passengers not checked in and in the boarding area 10 minutes before departure risk having their reservation canceled. Alaska Airlines requires a 50-minute check-in for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international flights. However, certain locations and airports have different rules. For instance, passengers traveling from Guadalajara, Mexico, must check in 90 minutes before their flight. These changes highlight the importance of planning ahead. Travelers should check their airline's specific policies before heading to the airport. Understanding these rules can help avoid stress and ensure a smoother travel experience.
