New Saints on the Horizon: Pope Francis' Latest Moves

Emil Kapaun, born in Kansas in 1916, served as a chaplain in both World War II and the Korean War. He was captured during the Korean War and died in a prisoner of war camp. His selfless acts during his captivity have been recognized as an "offering of life. " This category is distinct from martyrdom and heroic virtues, focusing on those who have given their lives for others. Salvo D’Acquisto, born in Naples in 1920, was a member of the Italian Carabinieri during World War II. He also gave his life for others, and his actions have been recognized in the same category as Fr. Kapaun. The Pope also recognized the heroic virtues of three other individuals: Michele Maura Montaner, Didaco Bessi, and Cunegonda Siwiec.
