New SBA Director Brings Politics to Small‑Biz Support

USA Georgia,Wednesday, June 24, 2026

Kevin Cooke, a former state legislator from Carrollton and University of Georgia graduate, has taken the helm of Georgia’s Small Business Administration district office. He says his goal is to help entrepreneurs get counseling and capital from banks, partners and other resources.

Cooke’s background includes a stint as associate athletic director at Shorter University in Rome, where he managed sports programs and budgets. He also spent a decade in the Georgia House of Representatives, representing his district from 2011 to 2021.

During his time in office he backed a controversial abortion bill and defended gun‑rights, while pledging never to vote for tax increases. These positions earned him both support and criticism from voters.

In 2020, Cooke ran in the Republican primary for a U. S. House seat but was defeated; that race later produced a new congresswoman.

Now, as SBA director, Cooke says he will work closely with lenders and community groups to ensure small businesses have the advice and funding they need. He hopes his experience in public service will help him navigate the state’s business landscape.

While some worry that his political past might influence program priorities, others see his record as evidence of strong leadership and commitment to fiscal responsibility. The real test will be whether he can translate his legislative experience into tangible benefits for entrepreneurs across Georgia.
