New Year's Tragedy: Remembering the Lost

A University of Alabama student, a former Princeton football star, and a devoted father were among those killed on New Year's Day in New Orleans. A rented pickup truck plowed into crowds on Bourbon Street, leaving fourteen dead and over thirty injured. Police shot and killed the driver, discovered to be an Army veteran with an ISIS flag inside the vehicle. Investigations into his motives are ongoing. Kareem Badawi, an 18-year-old engineering student, was home for the holidays. He was the youngest of three, adored by his family. His father, Belal Badawi, spoke of their deep bond and the emptiness Kareem's death left. The president of the University of Alabama expressed grief for the family's loss.

Martin "Tiger" Bech, a 27-year-old bond trader, was another victim. A Princeton graduate and accomplished wide receiver, Tiger was known for his energy and positive spirit. His brother, Jack, a player preparing for the NFL draft, mourned the loss of his biggest supporter. Reggie Hunter, a 37-year-old manager and devoted father, was also killed. Ni'Kyra Cheyenne Dedeaux, an 18-year-old high school graduate, and Matthew Tenedorio, a 25-year-old audiovisual technician at the Superdome, were among the victims. Hubert Gauthreaux, 21, Nicole Perez, 27, and Drew Dauphin, 26, also lost their lives. Nicole Perez, a single mother promoted at Kimmy's Market, was looking forward to her future. Her colleagues described her resilience and optimism. These losses have left families and communities grieving and seeking answers.
