New York's Suburbs Shift Right, A Warning Sign for Democrats
Long IslandMonday, September 23, 2024
The shift in suburban politics is not limited to New York. Nationwide, polls show that suburban voters are increasingly wary of progressive policies, such as cashless bail and open borders. These concerns are fueled by a growing sense of unease about the direction of the country, with high inflation, geopolitical tensions, and economic uncertainty all taking their toll.
Expert Melissa DeRosa, a top adviser to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, believes that Long Island's shift to the right could be a harbinger for similar communities across the country. "Suburbs, in general, traditionally are purple," she explains. "They can swing in either direction, and I think women in the suburbs in particular have a lot of voting power in the electorate. When I look at Long Island, and you see this encroachment in the last couple of years, where it's gone completely red, even under a good scenario for us in terms of the lines being drawn, I think it's a real wake-up call."
