NFL Players Might Be Better Off Skipping the Olympics
Derwin James Jr. shared his thoughts at LAX after the Fanatics Flag Football Classic, where NFL teammates faced off against the U.S. flag football squad and celebrities. He praised the flag players for their skill but urged active NFL athletes to think twice about joining the 2028 Summer Games.
“The high risk of joint injuries could hurt a player’s career, especially for key positions like receivers or cornerbacks,” James said.
“Even retired players and those on practice squads might have a clearer path to the Olympics, but even they should weigh the danger.”
James highlighted his own season stats—three interceptions and one fumble—to illustrate how important keeping a healthy body is.
Not everyone agrees with James. Joe Burrow, for instance, told reporters that competing in the Olympics is a lifelong dream and a chance to earn a gold medal. He sees the event as a unique honor, separate from the football season.
James’s message is simple:
Love the sport, but protect your future by avoiding unnecessary risks.
The conversation shows that even top athletes must balance ambition with long‑term health.
