NFL Stadiums Turn into Emergency Shelters

Imagine your favorite NFL stadium turning into a lifesaving hub during natural disasters. That's exactly what's happening as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) teams up with the National Football League (NFL). Four well-known stadiums—in Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Seattle, and Tampa—are now emergency shelters. Why stadiums? They're usually centrally located, easy to get to, and have all the necessities. Plus, they've proven their worth before. During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans' Superdome housed thousands of people. And during COVID-19 vaccinations, NFL stadiums served as mass vaccination sites, giving over a million doses!

But not just any stadium can be an emergency shelter. These selected ones have to meet certain rules. They need to be close to major roads and hospitals, and follow the Americans with Disabilities Act. Every five years, their "Mission Venue Ready" status is checked again to ensure they're still up for the task. This partnership comes just in time. Hurricane Helene is heading towards the southeastern United States. While we don't know yet if Raymond James Stadium in Tampa will be used as a disaster center, these stadiums are ready to help communities in need.
