The NHL has introduced significant changes that will take effect in the coming seasons.

Salary Cap Adjustments

  • Playoff Rules: Starting in the 2026-27 season, teams will face stricter salary cap rules during the playoffs to prevent loopholes.
  • Injury Exceptions: Teams can only exceed the cap by a limited amount if a player is injured. If a player returns from injury, a new playoff cap rule applies.

Season Structure

  • Longer Regular Season: The regular season will expand from 82 to 84 games.
  • Shorter Preparation: Teams will have less time to prepare, with a shorter training camp and fewer exhibition games.
  • Season Timeline: The season will start in late September and conclude by June 21.

Player Compensation

  • Rising Minimum Salary: The minimum salary will increase annually, starting at $850,000 and reaching $1 million by the 2029-30 season.
  • Playoff Fund Growth: The playoff fund will grow to $40 million by the end of the agreement.

Additional Rule Changes

  • Dress Code: Teams can no longer enforce dress codes on players.
  • Neck Protection: All players must wear neck protection.
  • Backup Goaltenders: Teams can now have a permanent backup goalie.
  • Loan Restrictions: Teams cannot loan players to the minors without them playing a game.
  • Contract Payments: Players can no longer defer payments in their contracts.

Olympic Participation & Retired Players

  • Olympic Agreement: The NHL and the players' association have extended the agreement for players to participate in the Olympics until the 2030 Games.
  • Healthcare Fund: A fund will be established to assist retired players with emergency healthcare.
