Imagine a building that's not just a workplace, but a city within a city. That's what Nikon has created with its new Global Headquarters and Innovation Center in Tokyo. Completed in July 2024, this six-floor marvel is a far cry from the old offices in Konan, Minato-Ku. Located where a Nikon factory once stood in Nishioi, Shinagawa-Ku, this space is designed to be a haven for both work and play.
The building, nicknamed "City of Light, " is all about natural light. Special eaves bounce indirect sunlight into the building, making it bright and airy. Plus, it's energy-efficient. The architects, Mitsubishi Jisho Design, used a solar shielding exterior facade and a structure that promotes natural ventilation. Each room can be independently heated or cooled, saving energy.
But what makes this headquarters special is its modern approach to work. No assigned desks here! Employees can work from anywhere – common areas, desk spaces, or even terraces. There are stations with portable batteries to power laptops all day. It's a flexible workspace that encourages different work styles.
The building isn't just for employees, though. On the first level, there's a Lawson convenience store, an eating area, and the entrance to the Nikon Museum. The museum, which was temporarily closed during the move, is now open and larger than before. It showcases Nikon's extensive history in cameras and lenses.
