North Korea's Troops in Ukraine: South Korea's Response

South Korea's president, Yoon Suk Yeol, has vowed action after reports surfaced that North Korea is sending troops to help Russia in Ukraine. He met with Poland's president, Andrzej Duda, to discuss defense cooperation amid the conflict. The U. S. and South Korea believe around 3, 000 North Korean troops are already in Russia, with plans to send more. This move violates U. N. rules, and both North Korea and Russia deny any presence of troops. Yoon said South Korea will work with allies to prepare countermeasures based on the level of cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

Seoul is considering several options, including providing Ukraine with weapons. The situation on the Korean Peninsula has worsened since 2022 due to North Korea's nuclear program escalation. There are concerns that North Korea may gain advanced military technology from Russia in exchange for sending troops. During their meeting, Yoon and Duda agreed to support additional military equipment deliveries from South Korea to Poland, including new tanks.
