NYC Schools Decide Where AI Can Help Teachers, Not Students
New York City, USATuesday, March 24, 2026
After a brief pause on chatbot use, the city has issued new rules that allow teachers to experiment with AI during lesson planning and message drafting.
The policy clearly states that AI is not permitted for:
- Grading
- Discipline decisions
- Selecting students for advanced classes
Allowed uses
- Research projects
- Creative assignments
- Teacher training
- Scheduling
- Resource planning
Prohibited uses
- Creating individualized plans for students with disabilities
- Surveillance of any kind
The guidance followed a month of public comment and will evolve into a full playbook next summer. The city also commits to:
- Publishing a public list of approved AI tools
- Enhancing data‑privacy checks
- Monitoring bias and classroom effectiveness
Parents and community groups, who advocated for a two‑year pause, are closely watching the rollout.
