Oil Depot Attack in Russia: A Close Call

On Wednesday night, a drone attack targeted an oil depot in Russia's Voronezh region. The governor of the region, Alexander Gusev, reported this on social media. He mentioned that Russian air defense units and electronic warfare systems had intercepted incoming drones, causing a fire. This incident occurred amidst escalating attacks on energy sources between Ukraine and Russia. While this attack took place, President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that the Kremlin’s forces have been targeting Ukrainian power grids this winter. Ukrainian sources on Telegram noted that the targeted oil depot was in Liski, approximately 90 kilometers from Voronezh, close to Ukraine’s border. That same day, a fire broke out at a major Lukoil refinery in Volgograd, a key city for Russia's oil industry. The refinery, known for producing petroleum products, processed over 13. 5 million tons of oil in 2023. This event underscores the vulnerability of energy infrastructure during ongoing hostilities.

Coincidentally, Russia retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities on the same day. The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Russia used 43 cruise and ballistic missiles and 74 attack drones, mainly targeting western Ukraine. Oleksandra Komuna, a resident of Sknyliv, experienced the attack firsthand, describing significant damage to her home and the surrounding area. The first prisoner exchange of the year between Ukraine and Russia saw 25 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians returned home. Among them were defenders from various regions, including Mariupol. Simultaneously, Ukrainian troops captured 23 Russian soldiers in the Donetsk region during a military operation.
