Old Ice, New Insights: Scientists Drill Deep into Antarctic Past

Imagine drilling a hole two miles deep into the frosty heart of Antarctica. That’s exactly what a team of international scientists did, seeking to uncover secrets hidden in ice that’s over a million years old. This ancient ice could reveal how Earth’s climate has changed over time and what role greenhouse gases play in these shifts. The project, known as Beyond EPICA, was no easy task. It took four years, a team of 16 scientists, and temperatures that could freeze your nose off – around minus 35 degrees Celsius. Finally, in January, they hit the jackpot: ice dated back to at least 1. 2 million years ago. “It was a big moment for us, ” said Italian researcher Federico Scoto. “We’re talking about ice that’s older than some of our oldest human ancestors. ”

So, what’s the big deal about old ice? Well, it’s like a time machine, showing us what Earth’s atmosphere was like during different periods. By studying the greenhouse gases trapped inside, scientists can understand how these gases influence climate change. “Think of it like this, ” explains Carlo Barbante, who led the project, “During the last 800, 000 years, even the warmest periods didn’t see carbon dioxide levels as high as they are today.
