OpenAI's Next Move: Into Wearables and More?

Imagine robots and computers that you can wear as easily as you slip on a pair of shoes. OpenAI just filed a trademark application on January 31 with the US Patent and Trademark Office to protect its rights to do just that. Most notably, this application is filled with more than just a list of software offerings, such as cloud computing and SaaS offerings. But, moving into hardware is not a surprise. After all, OpenAI has a team of talented individuals. The question is, what kind of hardware are we talking about? Earphones, headphones, sunglasses, smart watches, smart bands, smart jewelry, wearable computers, wearable cameras, digital media streaming devices, and virtual and augmented reality headsets. And they wont stop there. OpenAI also wants to make your robotics dreams come true Wearables are a great tool for health tracking. For instance, the Whoop band is already using OpenAI's technology to provide a conversational interface for health data. OpenAI's vision to use technology in wearables is a logical move.

Robots will be another area of interest. The OpenAI filings also include "humanoid robots, not configured" and "Humanoid robots having communication and learning functions for assisting and entertaining people. ". This is not just a random idea. This is exciting news for those who have been following the job listings on OpenAI's robotics team. However, there is a twist. Robotics company, Figure AI, is ending its partnership with OpenAI to solely focus on building its own in-house AI. This could lead OpenAI to build its own robots in-house. OpenAI is not going to stop with ChatGPT, as a company known for its AI research. Hardware is the next frontier for OpenAI. However, don't expect to see these products on the market in a hurry. Companies often file for these projects without ever launching them. We will see what the future holds.
