In response to a recent shooting in downtown Orlando, Mayor Buddy Dyer has taken steps to enhance safety. Starting tonight, bars and clubs in the entertainment district will stop selling alcohol after midnight. The city wants these streets cleared by 1 AM. This move comes after the police chief reported that weapons screenings were halted due to a state law. Tiana Green, a 22-year-old who works at a smoke shop near the shooting site, expressed concern. "I'm scared for my safety now, even walking to work, " she said. She believes these shootings are hurting small businesses and safety should be the top priority. The mayor announced a seven-day curfew from 1 AM to 5 AM in the downtown entertainment area. During this local state of emergency, alcohol sales will end at midnight. The city has tried various measures before, including entry checkpoints and increased officer presence. However, police stopped weapons screenings after Florida's permitless carry law went into effect last year. This year, police have seized over 300 guns. The city is also trying to boost security at downtown establishments by providing metal detectors.
