Oscar-Winning Filmmaker Attacked by Settlers in West Bank

The attack on Ballal happened after residents broke their fast for Ramadan. A settler, known for frequent attacks, went to Ballal's home with the military. Soldiers fired shots in the air. Ballal's wife heard him being beaten and screaming. She heard him say, "I'm dying. " Adra saw soldiers lead Ballal, handcuffed and blindfolded, into a military vehicle. Ballal's blood was still on the ground outside his home.
Another eyewitness confirmed some of Adra's account. They spoke anonymously out of fear. A group of masked settlers also assaulted activists with the Center for Jewish Nonviolence. They smashed car windows and slashed tires to make them leave.
The West Bank has a complex history. Israel captured it in the 1967 Mideast war. Palestinians want it for their future state. Israel has built over 100 settlements there. The 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank live under Israeli military rule. The Palestinian Authority administers population centers.
Masafer Yatta is a hotspot. Israel designated it as a live-fire training zone in the 1980s. They ordered residents to leave. Around 1, 000 residents have stayed. Soldiers regularly demolish homes, tents, and orchards. Palestinians fear expulsion.
The situation is tense. Israel has killed hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank. There has been a rise in settler attacks on Palestinians. There has also been a surge in Palestinian attacks on Israelis. The future of the West Bank remains uncertain.
