Pacific Rim: The Next Giant Leap into TV

Amazon has just made a big splash in the world of giant robots and monsters. They have teamed up with Legendary Television to bring the Pacific Rim universe to Prime Video. This isn't just any old TV show. It's a prequel that will take viewers back to the beginning of the story. The original movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro, is a fan favorite. It's about a world where giant monsters, called kaiju, emerge from an interdimensional rift in the Pacific Ocean. Humans fight back with massive robots called Jaegers, piloted by two people who share a psychic link. The action is intense, with one memorable scene featuring a Jaeger using a cargo ship as a bat to smash a kaiju. This isn't the first time Pacific Rim has tried to expand beyond the big screen. There was a sequel in 2018, starring John Boyega, and an anime series on Netflix called Pacific Rim: Black. But neither of these projects quite captured the magic of the original film. The franchise has also dabbled in comics, novels, and merchandise, but the original movie remains the standout.

The original Pacific Rim movie was a hit, grossing $400 million worldwide and becoming a cult classic among fans of kaiju and giant robot movies. The upcoming TV series, written and executive produced by Eric Heisserer, has a lot to live up to. Heisserer is known for his work on Shadow and Bone, so there's hope that the series will bring something fresh to the table. Amazon has already shown an interest in mecha content, having secured streaming rights for Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mobile Suit Gundam. This move makes sense, given the streamer's growing appetite for sci-fi and action content. The TV show isn't the only expansion of the Pacific Rim universe. Legendary has also been busy building the Godzilla Monsterverse, with the recent release of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. If they can replicate that success with Pacific Rim, they might just have another hit on their hands. But will the TV show stand out, or will it fade into the background like some of its predecessors? Only time will tell. One thing is for sure: fans of giant robots and monsters are in for a treat.
