Packaging Dilemma: Reusable vs. Disposable in Online Shopping

The world of online retail is booming, but so is the pile of packaging waste. A recent study took a closer look at two types of reusable packaging in Canada's apparel eCommerce market. They compared these with disposable options using something called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). In the first scenario, a brand shipped products to customers using both disposable and reusable mailers. The reusable mailers were managed centrally. Even after 40 uses and short distances, these reusable mailers had a bigger environmental impact in 9 out of 10 categories. Why? The long trip back and forth made a big difference.

In the second scenario, the brand rented out products. They used disposable cardboard boxes and reusable ones managed locally. Here, the reusable boxes were better in 6 out of 10 categories, even over long distances. So, what's the deal? It turns out that how far the packaging travels and how often it's reused are the biggest factors affecting its environmental impact.
