Pandas Touch Down in DC: A New Chapter in Panda Diplomacy
Washington DC, USAWednesday, October 16, 2024
Bao Li, one of the new arrivals, has some famous family ties. His mother, Bao Bao, was born at the National Zoo and returned to China in 2017. His grandparents, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, lived at the zoo for 23 years. Bao Li is known for his outgoing personality, much like his grandfather. Meanwhile, Qing Bao is more reserved and prefers her alone time.
The journey to DC wasn't just a simple flight. The pandas were prepped for weeks, spending time in their crates and getting used to the idea of a long flight. Keepers from DC even flew to China to help with the transition.
While fans will have to wait until January to see the pandas, the zoo is excited to have them. The zoo's panda exhibit was empty for 11 months after the last pair returned to China. Now, with Bao Li and Qing Bao, the zoo has its star attractions back.
