Paying for the Past: LA Catholic Church's Biggest Settlement
Los Angeles, USAFriday, October 18, 2024
The LA Catholic Church has paid a lot before. In 2007, they paid $740 million to other victims. Now, the total is over $1. 5 billion. Archbishop José H. Gomez said this settlement should give some relief to the survivors. He also said the money will come from savings, investments, and other sources.
Hundreds of LA priests are accused of abusing minors. One of them, Michael Baker, was convicted in 2007. He admitted to abusing boys to then-Archbishop Roger Mahony in 1986. But, Baker stayed in ministry until 2000, even after Mahony knew about the abuse. The church says they've changed since then, with strict background checks and training programs.
