A Meeting of Minds

In a recent meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in a discussion that lasted about an hour. Trump described the talk as "going well."

Optimism from Trump's Envoy

Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism about ending the war in Ukraine. He is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin later. Trump emphasized that everyone wants the war to end and hinted at one main issue left to resolve, though he did not provide details.

Recent negotiations have centered on the Donbas region, with proposals for a demilitarized economic zone.

Zelensky's Urgent Visit

Zelensky made a quick trip to Davos after dealing with Russian strikes on Kyiv's infrastructure, which have left many without power, water, or heating. There were concerns that Trump's focus on Greenland might distract from the Ukraine war.

Earlier, Zelensky had stated that a US plan to end the war was almost ready, but differences remain on Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

Kremlin's Cautious Stance

The Kremlin was less optimistic than Witkoff. Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, stated that talks would continue but did not share Witkoff's hope for a deal. It remains unclear whether Putin will join Trump's Board of Peace on Gaza.

Unfinished Business

Zelensky hoped to sign important documents with Trump at Davos, but they are not finalized yet. However, Ukraine's national security team discussed economic development, post-war recovery, and security guarantees with US counterparts.
