Now, you'd think the Senate would ask tough questions about these issues during hearings for the next Secretary of Defense. But no, they focused on culture wars and easy topics.

Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host, was up for the job. He kept talking about "meritocracy" and "wokeness" in the military. But being a TV host doesn't seem like the right prep for running the U. S. defense. It's like putting a horse in charge, as the ancient Roman emperor Caligula once considered. The U. S. military is in trouble. Our industrial base is weak, and China is building huge ships and scary weapons. We need someone who understands these real threats, not just how to go viral on social media.
