Phil Collins: A Life of Music and Health Challenges
Health Updates and Career Reflections
Phil Collins, the iconic musician, is approaching his 75th birthday on January 30th. In a recent BBC podcast interview, he shared personal health updates and reflections on his illustrious career.
Health Struggles and Recovery
Collins revealed that he has a live-in nurse to manage his medications around the clock. Over the past few years, he has faced numerous health issues, including:
- Knee problems
- Kidney complications
- A severe case of COVID-19
He admitted that his kidney problems might be linked to excessive drinking. Although he wasn't a nightly drinker, he consumed alcohol during the day, which may have contributed to his health issues. These problems led to months of hospitalization and multiple knee surgeries.
Impact on Music and Career
Despite his struggles, Collins remains positive about his career, calling it "varied and eventful." However, his health issues have affected his ability to play the drums. In 2022, he retired from drumming due to his inability to grip a drumstick. During Genesis's final tour, his son Nic took over the percussion while Phil handled vocals from a seated position.
Collins also shared that his health decline has impacted his creative drive, stating that he is no longer "hungry" to record music.
Looking Ahead: The Phil Collins Story
Despite these challenges, Collins is looking forward to the premiere of his docu-concert, "The Phil Collins Story," which will celebrate his life, career, and music. The show will debut on February 3rd at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, New York, featuring songs from Genesis and his solo works.
