Philippine Patrol Vessels Face Chinese Coast Guard Attacks
Wednesday, December 4, 2024
Three Philippine vessels were on a routine patrol to keep Filipino fishermen safe when the Chinese ships approached at dawn. The Philippine coast guard ships responded by renewing their commitment to safeguard their national interests in the West Philippine Sea.
The Philippine coast guard clarified that these aggressive actions were not standard law enforcement measures but rather acts of unlawful aggression. The waters in question are claimed by China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and the Philippines. Indonesia has also had its own confrontations with the Chinese coast guard.
The Philippine coast guard showed videos of the water cannon attacks and close maneuvers by the Chinese vessels at a recent news conference. The U. S. , not laying any claims in the region, has always stressed the importance of free navigation and peaceful resolutions. They've even warned of defending the Philippines if attacked.
